What to see in Zakopane

Zakopane (pronounced [Zako'panε]) is a city located in southern Poland, with approximately 28,000 inhabitants (2004). It belongs to the voivodate of the little Poland. The city, which is known as the Winter Capital of Poland, is located in the southern part of the Podhale region, at the foot of the Tatras mountains.

The oldest documents mentioning Zakopane date back to the seventeenth century, in which a forest clearing called Zakopisko is described. In 1676 it was a villa of 43 inhabitants. In 1824, along with a part of the Tatra Montes was sold to the Homola family. Its history below dates back to the development of mining and the metallurgical industry of the region and then to tourism. In recent years it has become an important tourist city due to the strong population growth it has faced.

It belongs, since 1999 to the voivodate of the little Poland; It was previously part of the Voivodia of Nowy Sacz between 1975 and 1998.
